Im often asked whats the difference between a technology Architect and a Designer. I use a simple "real architecture" metaphor. Using the new Queensferry Crossing as the base artefact.
An architect selects the type of bridge (eg suspension, cantalever etc) and the materials and a designer selects the colours, the lighting and suspension system. Its the role of the architect to "paint" the picture of the end state aligned to organisational, vendor, business, technology and transformational roadmaps/flightplans.
In essence similar to those hoardings which are put up when a new building is being built to show the architects vision of what it will look and feel like.. Then when the building is finished the hoarding is taken down to reveal the building behind.
